FAQ: Engagement Session {Rock Hill Engagement Photographer}

So, I had a friend ask me the other day about why couples do engagement sessions. So I thought I would share with you my take on why.

Sometimes brides, grooms and their families really don’t know why they want an engagement session. They’ve just heard or read that it’s the thing to do, so they ask for it. It will help the photographer, the bride and groom and the family if everyone knows what’s expected from the session. A session that is just to get a newspaper announcement photograph will be handled differently than a session to show a story of the couple and their relationship. And engagement photos are NOT mandatory by any means, but wouldn’t it be better to know that you love your photographer before you hand over your wedding memories? Let’s face it, you want your wedding to be captured by someone that feels the same way you feel about such a momentous occasion.

To be quite honest, my thoughts for why a couple would do an engagement session is to get to know the photographer that they have chosen to shoot their wedding. You may know your photographer because you follow their blog, looked at their website, and your best friend may have used them for their wedding. You may have a friend that’s a photographer. But does that mean they are the right photographer for your wedding? Maybe, maybe not.

Some things to think about include:

Do you get along? This doesn’t mean you have to be best buddies (though that’s GREAT), but you shouldn’t be turned off by the conversation. Also, just because you may know this person socially, have you worked with them or seen them work? Do you like the way they dress, act, and interact with a crowd?

Do you share the same vision? Do you like traditional or photo-journalistic photography? Or a mix of both? You can get an idea of their vision by looking at their website, blog and social media outlets like Facebook. Most photographers that have blogs and social media will keep those most up to date, but all above mentioned should reflect their vision.

What will you use the engagement photos for after the session? Some examples are a newspaper announcement, save the date cards, or even a guest sign in book for an engagement party or the wedding itself. Another idea might be a framed print for your home or office or to give loved ones that live far away. Knowing this will help the photographer plan your session.

What is your photography budget? There are photographers out there for every budget, however, their vision and their fees don’t always match your budget. Be sure to know the answers to the above questions so that you will know what to expect on the budget. Many photographers will work with couples to find a package that will satisfy them.

And what would be a post from me without photos?

I hope this is helpful. If you have a comment or question, PLEASE click the comment button above. I would love to hear from you.
